Death Certificate Translation in California
California issues two kinds of certified death certificate. An authorized copy goes only to people the law lists - close family, the executor or administrator, attorneys, funeral directors and a few others - and is the one that establishes the death for legal purposes. An informational copy can go to anyone, but it is marked as not valid to establish identity and is no use for an estate or for an apostille.
Copies come from the county recorder where the death occurred, or from the California Department of Public Health.

Iranian death records
Southern California has the largest Iranian community outside Iran. In Iran a death is registered with the Civil Registration Organization, which issues a death certificate, and the deceased's shenasnameh - the identity booklet everyone in Iran holds - is stamped as void.
For a California probate or an insurance claim, the death certificate is the primary document; the annotated shenasnameh is useful supporting evidence, especially when the family's other records refer to the deceased by it. Both are translated in full, with dates converted from the Iranian solar calendar.
