<p>A divorce decree answers one question for almost everyone who asks for it: is the earlier marriage over? That answer frequently sits not in the body of the judgment but in a stamp, a notation or a separate certificate added later - and that is the part most often left out of a translation.</p>
The finality notation is the point
A judgment of divorce is often not final the day it is signed. There is an appeal period, and only when it has passed does the divorce take effect. Many countries record that moment separately: a Spanish or Latin American decree is marked firme, a German one rechtskräftig, an Italian one passata in giudicato, a Brazilian one carries a certificate of trânsito em julgado.
That notation is what proves the marriage ended, and when. A translation of the judgment without it proves only that a court decided to end the marriage at some point - which is not the same thing, and not enough for USCIS or a county clerk.
Where a divorce decree is needed
- USCIS. Marriage-based petitions require evidence that every prior marriage of both spouses legally ended.
- Remarriage in the United States. Marriage licensing offices may ask when and how a previous marriage ended.
- Name changes, where the decree restores a former name.
- Recognition abroad. A US divorce used in another country normally needs a certified copy from the court clerk, an apostille, and a translation into the destination language.
Divorces recorded on the marriage certificate

Religious divorces
A religious divorce - a Jewish get, an Islamic talaq - is translated as the document it is. Whether it has civil effect depends on the country where it was granted and on US law, and that is a question for an immigration or family attorney, not something a translation can settle.
