Driver's License Translation in New York
New York does not exchange foreign driver's licenses. To drive here as a resident you pass the written test, complete the five-hour pre-licensing course and pass the road test, whatever your experience abroad.
The Green Light law, in effect since 2019, lets residents apply regardless of immigration status and accepts foreign passports and foreign licenses among the proofs of identity.

The road test rule - and where we can help
If your license is not in English, the DMV asks you to bring an International Driving Permit or a certified translation of it to the road test, and it specifies who may certify that translation: a consulate, the US Department of State, or another official government agency. A translation from a private company - ours included - does not meet that rule, and we would rather tell you now than have you find out at the test site.
