Divorce Decree Translation in Washington, DC

Divorces in the District are granted by the Family Court of the DC Superior Court, and certified copies of the decree come from that court. With so many foreign nationals in the city, DC divorces often have to be recognised abroad - and foreign divorces often have to be proved here.

French divorces without a judge

Since 2017, France has allowed a divorce by mutual consent without any court: each spouse's lawyer countersigns a private divorce agreement, which is then deposited with a notary. The notary's deposit is what makes the divorce effective, and the divorce is then noted in the margin of the couple's French civil status records.

A US reviewer who expects a judge's signature may not recognise the result as a divorce. The translation covers the agreement, the notary's certificate of deposit and the annotated marriage record, and names each one accurately.
