We provide certified Italian to English and English to Italian translation for documents that must be accepted by US agencies, courts and universities — and, in the other direction, for records being submitted to Italian comuni and consulates.

Italian citizenship by descent runs the opposite way from most work we do

Most certified translation is foreign-language documents into English for a US reviewer. Italian citizenship jure sanguinis is the reverse: US-issued birth, marriage and death records translated into Italian, for a comune or consulate.

The requirements are correspondingly different. The receiving comune or consulate typically expects the US record to be apostilled first, with the translation attached to the apostilled document rather than to a plain copy. Getting that order wrong — a translation of an un-apostilled record, or an apostille obtained after translating — means redoing the work, and consular appointments are not easy to rebook.

Italian civil records come from the comune, not a national registry

Italian civil status is held locally. What you receive depends on which extract you requested: an estratto per riassunto summarises the entry, while an estratto per copia integrale reproduces it in full including annotations. For many purposes only the full version carries the information the receiving body needs. If you are unsure which you have, send it and we will tell you before translating.
