St. Louis has the largest Bosnian community outside Bosnia and Herzegovina, built up from the refugee resettlement of the 1990s. Documents from that population span two states and a war: records issued by Yugoslav authorities before 1992, and records issued or reconstructed afterwards by successor authorities. Kansas City adds Somali, Mexican and Vietnamese communities.

Missouri has two USCIS field offices, in Kansas City and St. Louis. Vital records come from the Bureau of Vital Records in Jefferson City, marriage records from the county Recorder of Deeds, and apostilles from the Secretary of State.
