Georgia does not use its Secretary of State for apostilles
This is the single most useful thing to know about Georgia documents. Since 1998 the sole designated apostille authority in Georgia has been the Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority. Not the Secretary of State — which is where almost every generic guide on the internet sends people, and where their documents sit until they are returned.
Georgia vital records are issued by the State Office of Vital Records in Atlanta or by county vital records offices. Superior Courts handle felony, divorce and land matters, and receive translated evidence with a certificate of accuracy attached.
Documents from West and East Africa
Nigerian, Ghanaian and Liberian records are usually already in English, which means they need certification of the copy rather than translation. Ethiopian and Eritrean documents are in Amharic or Tigrinya and use the Ethiopian calendar, which is seven to eight years behind the Gregorian.
A certified translation renders the Ethiopian calendar date as printed and gives the Gregorian equivalent alongside it, rather than silently substituting one for the other.
