Certified Translation Services in Georgia

Metro Atlanta has one of the fastest-growing foreign-born populations in the Southeast, and the paperwork reflects it: Mexican, Guatemalan, Honduran, Nigerian, Ethiopian, Vietnamese and Korean records all appear in volume. Atlanta has both a USCIS field office and an immigration court, so a substantial share of the state's translation demand is immigration-driven.

Georgia does not use its Secretary of State for apostilles

This is the single most useful thing to know about Georgia documents. Since 1998 the sole designated apostille authority in Georgia has been the Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority. Not the Secretary of State — which is where almost every generic guide on the internet sends people, and where their documents sit until they are returned.

Georgia vital records are issued by the State Office of Vital Records in Atlanta or by county vital records offices. Superior Courts handle felony, divorce and land matters, and receive translated evidence with a certificate of accuracy attached.

Documents from West and East Africa

Nigerian, Ghanaian and Liberian records are usually already in English, which means they need certification of the copy rather than translation. Ethiopian and Eritrean documents are in Amharic or Tigrinya and use the Ethiopian calendar, which is seven to eight years behind the Gregorian.

A certified translation renders the Ethiopian calendar date as printed and gives the Gregorian equivalent alongside it, rather than silently substituting one for the other.

Preguntas frecuentes

Who issues apostilles in Georgia?

The Georgia Superior Court Clerks' Cooperative Authority, not the Secretary of State. Georgia is one of the few states where this is the case, and it is a very common and costly mistake.

Do Nigerian documents need translating?

Usually not — they are generally in English. What they may need is certification or authentication of the copy, which is a different service.

How do you handle Ethiopian calendar dates?

The date is rendered as printed, with the Gregorian equivalent shown alongside rather than replacing it.

Do you have an Atlanta office?

No. Our only office is in Edgewater, New Jersey. Georgia work is delivered electronically.
