Hijri Date Converter
Convert Islamic (Hijri) dates to Gregorian and back, using Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar or the tabular Islamic calendar.
Your browser has no Umm al-Qura calendar, so the tabular calendar is used.

The short answer
The Hijri calendar has twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days, so its year is 354 or 355 days and starts about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year. Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar put 1 Muharram 1448 on 16 June 2026. Dates fixed by sighting the moon elsewhere can differ by a day, so say which calendar a conversion used.
How the Hijri calendar works
The Islamic calendar counts years from the Hijra in 622 CE and follows the moon only. A month begins with the new crescent and lasts 29 or 30 days; twelve months make a year of 354 or 355 days. With no leap month, the calendar moves through the seasons: Ramadan began on 1 March 2025, 18 February 2026 and, by the Umm al-Qura calendar, 8 February 2027.
Three ways to fix a date, and why converters disagree
- Umm al-Qura. Saudi Arabia's official calendar for civil purposes, computed in advance from astronomical rules. Saudi government documents use it.
- Sighting. In many countries a month begins when the crescent is actually seen, so dates are announced, not calculated, and can differ from Umm al-Qura by a day.
- Tabular (civil). A fixed arithmetic calendar with a 30-year leap cycle, used by many software libraries. It can be a day or two off the other two.
The converter uses Umm al-Qura by default and can switch to the tabular calendar. A one-day difference between converters is normal; neither one is "wrong".
| Hijri year | 1 Muharram (Umm al-Qura) | 1 Muharram (tabular) |
|---|---|---|
| 1446 | 7 July 2024 | 8 July 2024 |
| 1447 | 26 June 2025 | 27 June 2025 |
| 1448 | 16 June 2026 | 17 June 2026 |
| 1449 | 6 June 2027 | 6 June 2027 |
| 1450 | 25 May 2028 | 25 May 2028 |
Hijri dates on documents
Saudi birth certificates, family records, older residence permits and court documents are often dated in the Hijri calendar, sometimes with the Gregorian date beside it, and marked هـ (AH). Dates in other countries' religious records, such as marriage contracts, may also be Hijri. The months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Akhirah, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah; their spelling in Latin letters varies, and a translation keeps one form throughout.
Iranian and Afghan documents use the Solar Hijri calendar instead, which is a different calendar with the same starting year: see the Persian date converter.
Hijri dates in a certified translation
A translation gives the Hijri date as written ("25 Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH") and may add the Gregorian equivalent in square brackets, with the calendar used for the conversion. If the document prints both dates and they are a day apart, both are translated as printed. Changing either one to make them agree would make the translation inaccurate.

Questions
Why do Hijri converters give different dates?
They use different calendars: Umm al-Qura, the tabular calendar, or dates fixed by moon sighting. A one-day difference is normal. Check which calendar the issuing country used.
What Hijri year is it?
By Umm al-Qura, 1448 AH began on 16 June 2026 and 1449 AH begins on 6 June 2027.
Is the Hijri calendar the same as the Persian calendar?
No. Both count from the Hijra, but the Hijri calendar is lunar and the Persian (Solar Hijri) calendar is solar, so their year numbers differ: 1448 AH and 1405 SH both include November 2026.
Will a translation change a Hijri date to Gregorian?
No. It translates the Hijri date as written and can add the Gregorian date as a note, naming the calendar used.
