Marriage Certificate Translation

<p>Marriage certificates carry a complication birth certificates usually do not: the document often has to establish not only that a marriage happened, but that it is still in force — or that a previous one ended. That second job is where translations most often fall short.</p>

The annotations are frequently the whole point

In many countries a marriage record is a living entry. Divorces, annulments, subsequent marriages and name changes are recorded as annotations on or alongside the original entry rather than as separate certificates.

For a spousal petition this matters directly. If either party was previously married, USCIS needs evidence the earlier marriage was properly terminated. That evidence is often an annotation on the original marriage record — so a translation covering only the marriage itself omits precisely the fact the adjudicator is looking for, and produces a Request for Evidence.

We translate the annotations, including ones added years after the original entry, and including any that appear on the reverse.

Name changes create a documentation trail

Where a spouse changed their surname on marriage, the marriage certificate becomes the bridge between the name on their birth certificate and the name on their current passport. That chain has to be legible across the whole document set — birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport — or a reviewer is left with three documents that appear to name different people.

Formats vary more than you would expect

A marriage record might be a single certificate, an extract from a civil register, or a booklet covering the household — a Turkish evlenme cüzdanı or a French livret de famille records considerably more than the marriage alone. What the document actually establishes differs accordingly, and a receiving body expecting one form may not accept another. Certification and notarization
