Translation for Technology and Hardware Companies
Professional translation for hardware makers and IT companies: product documentation and safety information, regulatory declarations, foreign tenders, contracts and patents.
The short answer
Technology companies selling abroad translate product documentation, safety information and regulatory paperwork: radio equipment sold in the EU needs instructions in the language each country sets (Directive 2014/53/EU, Article 10(8)). Foreign tenders and contracts need accurate English versions, patents need translations for the USPTO (37 CFR 1.52(d)), and controlled technical data must be handled with export rules in mind (15 CFR 734.13).
Rules that apply
Each rule links to its source. Checked 4 November 2026. Rules change, so confirm with the office that will receive your documents.
| Rule | Source |
|---|---|
| Radio equipment must be accompanied by instructions and safety information in a language easily understood by end-users, as determined by the member state. | Directive 2014/53/EU (RED), Article 10(8) |
| Releasing controlled technology to a foreign person can be a deemed export under the EAR. | 15 CFR 734.13(b) |
| Under ITAR, disclosing technical data to a foreign person is an export. | 22 CFR 120.50 |
| A non-English patent application needs an English translation and a statement of accuracy. | 37 CFR 1.52(d) |
| Product inscriptions, instructions and warranty certificates in Quebec must be in French. | Charter of the French Language, CQLR c. C-11, s. 51 |
What technology companies send us
- Product documentation: quick-start guides, safety leaflets, installation and service manuals, as documents.
- Regulatory paperwork: declarations of conformity, test reports and certification correspondence for foreign markets.
- Tenders and procurement: requests for proposal from foreign buyers and governments, and your bid documents.
- Contracts: distribution, supply, OEM and service agreements with foreign partners.
- Patents: applications and office actions, for filings and freedom-to-operate reviews.
Hardware sold abroad
Devices ship with safety information, instructions and regulatory statements that each market wants in its own language. Radio equipment sold in the EU needs instructions and safety information in the language each member state sets, and Quebec requires French on instructions and warranty certificates. Warnings keep their signal words, specifications and model numbers are copied exactly, and the names of buttons and ports match what is printed on the device.
Foreign tenders
Government and enterprise tenders abroad are long, formal and deadline-driven. Translate the tender conditions, technical specification and evaluation criteria first, so your team can decide whether to bid, then the forms and contract you will sign. Clause and requirement numbers are kept so your answers can cite them. Bids may have to be submitted in the buyer's language; check the tender rules.
Export control
Technical drawings, source code and specifications for controlled items are "technology" under export rules. Giving them to a translator who is a foreign person, even in the US, can be a deemed export that needs a licence. Tell us before sending a controlled document; we will confirm who would work on it, or decline if we cannot staff it appropriately.
Contracts and patents
Distribution and OEM agreements are translated as contracts, with territories, exclusivity, warranties and liability caps exact. Patent documents follow the rules on our patent translation page.
Certifications and market access
Getting a device approved abroad produces correspondence with test labs, certification bodies and regulators, often in their language: test plans, deficiency reports, certificates and conditions of approval. A delay in understanding a deficiency report is a delay in launching. We translate these quickly and exactly, with clause references, test numbers and limit values kept as written.
Service and warranty
Service partners and resellers abroad need warranty terms, service procedures and spare-parts lists. Warranty terms are contracts and are translated exactly; part numbers and tool numbers are never translated, only the descriptions next to them.
Hiring engineers
Technology companies sponsoring engineers for visas file diplomas, transcripts and experience letters, each with a certified translation for USCIS.
